Ontario: Kenneth Law, the Canadian former chef accused of operating a global ‘suicide-by-mail’ business, is set to plead guilty to multiple charges of murder and aiding suicide. The 59-year-old was arrested last year following an international probe into the distribution of lethal substances through his online companies.
Law allegedly shipped more than 1,200 packages containing sodium nitrite to vulnerable individuals in at least 40 countries. While he was initially charged with aiding and abetting, Canadian prosecutors eventually upgraded his charges to include 14 counts of second-degree murder.
The investigation gained massive scale after British police revealed that 117 people in the United Kingdom had died after purchasing items from Law’s websites.
Global authorities from the United States to New Zealand have since linked Law to dozens of additional deaths. By entering a guilty plea, Law avoids a high-profile trial that was expected to highlight the dangers of online forums that encourage self-harm.
