CANBERRA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has sharply denounced the ‘appalling treatment’ of activists aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, calling the actions ‘unacceptable’ during a formal telephone conversation with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday.
The diplomatic row escalated significantly after Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, published a controversial video showing dozens of seized foreign activists, including 12 Canadian citizens, tied up and forced to kneel on the ground.
Carney strongly condemned Ben Gvir's actions and officially called for an independent investigation into the military's conduct.
While President Herzog defended the interception as a lawful action against terrorism, the incident has drawn severe global backlash.
Activists reported facing constant physical threats during detention before being deported, prompting Canada to summon the Israeli ambassador as several European nations now push for international sanctions against Ben Gvir.
