MANILA: The Philippines has officially called off rescue operations for 16 people missing inside a collapsed commercial building, shifting the mission to a recovery phase. The multi-story supermarket, located north of Manila, caved in after a powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake violently shook the region.
For days, disaster response teams utilized advanced life-detection equipment, thermal imaging, and trained sniffer dogs in a desperate bid to locate survivors trapped deep beneath the concrete slabs. However, officials announced that no further signs of life have been detected under the rubble.
With hope of finding anyone else alive faded, heavy machinery has been brought in to clear the massive field of debris. The structural failure has already claimed multiple lives, and an official investigation is underway to determine if building code violations contributed to the catastrophic collapse.
