London: A powerful 'heat dome' has engulfed the majority of Europe, pushing temperatures to record highs for May and triggering heat alerts in many nations.

The weather pattern, resulting from a strong area of high pressure trapping hot air from North Africa over Western and Central Europe, has caused temperatures to rise 10-16°C above seasonal averages. The most affected countries include the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Germany, and parts of Italy.

In the United Kingdom, temperatures reached a record 34.8°C, at Kew Gardens in London, making it the country's hottest May day on record. France also experienced its hottest May temperatures on record, with more than 350 towns setting new monthly highs and dozens of departments under heat alert.

Spain and Portugal are among the most severely affected countries, with temperatures in certain regions expected to reach 38–40°C. Authorities have issued a warning about growing health risks, particularly for children, elderly people, and outdoor workers. In certain regions of Italy, working outside during peak hours of the day is banned.

Meteorologists forecast that the heatwave will persist the entire week, raising concerns about drought conditions, wildfires, and pressure on water resources. Climate experts warn that these severe heat waves are becoming more frequent and intense due to global warming.
