Washington DC: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and free from restrictions, warning that any attempt by Iran to impose tolls or disrupt shipping would be unacceptable to the international community.

Rubio said no major global power supports a tolling system in the strategic waterway, including Russia and China, stressing that uninterrupted access through the strait is essential for global trade and energy security. He described any obstruction as unlawful, unsustainable and harmful for the world economy.

His remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States and regional leaders to shape a possible agreement related to tensions in the Gulf. Rubio said U.S. President Donald Trump recently held what he described as a ‘historic’ call with leaders from the region, with discussions focused on reaching alignment over the framework of a preliminary deal.

Rubio acknowledged that negotiations remain delicate, saying even small disagreements over wording could take days to resolve. However, he made clear that Washington would only support an agreement that meets its expectations.

‘If there’s going to be a deal, it’s either going to be a good deal or there isn’t going to be one,’ Rubio said.
