Senegal parliament speaker steps down in political crisis

Dakar: Senegal's parliament speaker, El Malick Ndiaye, has officially resigned from his post, significantly deepening the severe political crisis gripping the West African nation.
The sudden decision comes exactly two days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the entire government following months of escalating internal political tensions.
Ndiaye, who had served as head of the National Assembly since 2024, announced his departure via social media, calling it a personal choice made in the higher interest of national stability and institutional respect.
The high-profile resignation effectively leaves a critical leadership vacuum at the helm of Senegal's legislative branch.
The speaker's strategic exit is widely expected to clear the path for the recently ousted premier, Ousmane Sonko, to run for leadership of the parliament, where the ruling Pastef party maintains a commanding majority.
However, political analysts warn that a resulting executive-legislative standoff could severely complicate the president's ability to pass necessary state reforms and resolve the country's pressing economic challenges.
