Luanda: An illicit gold mine in the northwest Bengo region of Angola collapsed due to a landslip, killing at least 28 persons, according to police. Tonnes of soil collapsed on Saturday in the Nambuangongo township, where miners were allegedly engaging in illegal the extraction of gold. The workers were buried beneath the debris.

Police spokesperson Gaspar Luis Inacio said the extent of the tragedy by stating that 13 of the victims were members of the same family. Emergency workers were sent to search for those who might be trapped beneath the collapsed mine, but two persons are still missing. Provincial civil protection personnel said that four people were rescued from the scene alive.

Several injured survivors were moved to Bengo Central Hospital for medical care. According to hospital officials, at least three patients are still under medical supervision, although they are conscious and in stable condition.

The incident is one of the most deadly illegal mining accidents reported in Angola in recent years. While the country has always struggled with unauthorised diamond mining, growing interest in gold and other minerals has resulted in an increase in artisanal mining activities, which are frequently carried out without sufficient safety precautions. Authorities are likely to look into the circumstances behind the accident.
