Authorities in Sharjah are investigating the deaths of an Indian expatriate woman and her young daughter following a tragic incident at a residential tower in the Al Nahda area.
According to eyewitnesses and building staff, the 35-year-old woman allegedly threw her five-year-old daughter from the balcony of their apartment before jumping herself from the high-rise building on Wednesday morning.
Residents said the incident occurred at around 7:15am at the tower, where the family had reportedly been living for more than seven years. Witnesses stated that the apartment was located on the 15th floor, while the building also includes several parking levels, increasing the height of the fall.
A security guard at the building said he heard a loud noise and rushed outside, where he discovered the bodies of the child and the mother near the building. Police and ambulance teams were immediately alerted, and authorities cordoned off the area during the investigation.
Neighbours reported that police had visited the family’s apartment a day earlier following an alleged domestic dispute. Building staff also said the woman’s husband had mentioned that she had been experiencing mental health issues.
The husband, an Indian expatriate from Kerala working in Dubai as an aircraft resource allocation officer, is currently being questioned by authorities as part of the investigation.
Residents described the young girl as friendly and cheerful. The building’s security guard recalled seeing her wave goodbye to her father each morning before school.
The woman’s extended family, including her sister and in-laws, are also understood to be living in the UAE. Reports indicated that the woman had been operating an online business.
Authorities have confirmed that the case has been registered as a suicide and referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation. Officials have withheld the identities of the deceased pending family consent.
