Pope Francis strongly condemned the severe environmental devastation in southern Italy’s Campania region, known as the ‘Land of Fires,’ calling the toxic pollution a grave sin against both creation and humanity.
The area has suffered for decades from the illegal dumping and burning of industrial waste controlled by organized crime networks. This systemic ecocide has poisoned local agriculture and triggered a devastating spike in regional cancer rates.
Speaking to affected residents, the Pontiff demanded immediate state action to clean up the contaminated lands. He urged the community to resist ecological destruction and fight for environmental justice and public health.
