Toxic Chemical Leak Forces Mass Evacuations in Southern California

California: Thousands of residents in Southern California were ordered to evacuate after a dangerous chemical tank leak at an aerospace facility in Orange County raised fears of a major explosion or toxic spill.

The emergency unfolded in the city of Garden Grove, where a storage tank containing methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical used in plastics and aerospace manufacturing, began overheating and releasing vapors. Authorities warned the tank could either crack and spill thousands of gallons of hazardous chemicals or explode, potentially affecting nearby tanks.

Evacuation orders were expanded across several Orange County cities, including Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton, Buena Park, and Westminster, affecting roughly 40,000 people. Emergency shelters were opened as firefighters worked to cool the tank and stabilize the situation.

Orange County fire officials said crews were using remotely operated water systems to keep temperatures under control while experts from across the state and country searched for a long-term solution. Authorities stressed that the situation remained highly unstable.

Health officials warned that exposure to the chemical vapors could cause serious respiratory problems, eye irritation, headaches, and nausea, although air monitoring had not yet detected dangerous vapor levels outside the evacuation zone.

The incident began at a facility operated by GKN Aerospace, a company that manufactures aircraft components. Officials said the crisis worsened after a valve malfunction prevented crews from safely reducing pressure inside the tank.

Authorities continued urging residents to leave the affected areas, warning that the risk of explosion or chemical release had not been eliminated.
