Canberra: A second group of Australian women and children linked to ISIS has left the Al-Roj refugee camp in northeastern Syria and may soon be returned to Australia, according to reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The group reportedly travelled out of the camp on Thursday under Syrian government escort and is expected to reach Damascus, though their final travel plans to Australia remain unclear.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said Australian security agencies have been preparing for the possible return of ISIS-linked individuals for years. He said the group includes people with different levels of involvement and did not give details on their travel arrangements.

The Australian government has said it will not directly help bring back citizens linked to ISIS, but also admits it has limited power to stop them from returning.

The move follows the recent return of another group of women and children from Syria, some of whom have faced serious criminal charges upon arrival, including slavery and terrorism-related offences.

Many Australians travelled to Syria between 2012 and 2016 to join ISIS members, and after the group’s defeat, they were held in detention camps run by Kurdish authorities.
