Tegucigalpa :At least 19 people were killed in two separate gun attacks along the Honduran coast, highlighting continuing violence linked to gangs, organised crime, and long-running land conflicts in the Central American country.

One of the attacks took place in the northern municipality of Trujillo, where gunmen opened fire at a plantation, killing at least 10 workers, according to Honduran police. Authorities said the region has been affected for years by agrarian disputes and conflicts involving land rights and environmental activism.

In a separate incident near the Guatemalan border, assailants ambushed police officers in the municipality of Omoa in the Cortes department. Six officers, including a senior official, were killed while travelling as part of an anti-gang operation from the capital Tegucigalpa.

Police said the overall death toll from the plantation attack may still change, as some victims’ relatives reportedly removed bodies from the scene before investigators completed their work. Security forces and forensic teams have been deployed to both areas as authorities begin investigations into the attacks.

The violence has renewed attention on Honduras’ ongoing security challenges. Despite a decline in homicide rates in recent years, the country continues to struggle with gang violence, drug trafficking networks, and attacks linked to land disputes. Human rights organisations have also criticised previous hardline security measures, warning about allegations of abuses and excessive force.
