TOKYO: A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan early Monday morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The tremor occurred at approximately 3:56 a.m. local time (00:56: GMT) at a relatively shallow depth of 20 kilometers. Despite the quake's strength, which was felt across the region, authorities immediately confirmed there was no threat of a tsunami.
The earthquake registered a lower 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7 in several localized areas. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage following the incident.
While Japan is a region accustomed to frequent seismic activity, the lack of a tsunami warning provided significant relief to coastal residents.
Emergency services continue to monitor the situation for potential aftershocks, though the primary threat appears to have passed without resulting in a major humanitarian or infrastructure crisis.
