Brussels: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on Wednesday that any eventual removal of US forces from Europe would not undermine the alliance's ability to protect its member states.
Speaking ahead of a NATO defence ministers conference in Brussels, Rutte stated that the alliance remains militarily solid and able of responding to challenges, despite Washington's reassessment of its global military strategy.
The remarks come after rumours that the United States may reduce some force deployment in Europe as part of a wider review of security priorities, which includes a greater emphasis on the Indo-Pacific area and tensions with China.
He asserted that while maintaining close ties with Washington, European NATO countries are now assuming more responsibility for regional security.
The head of NATO also reaffirmed the alliance's long-term commitment for Ukraine, stating that member nations are still dedicated to boosting security and preserving stability throughout Europe.
NATO burden-sharing has remained a hot topic in recent years as US leaders have repeatedly urged European partners to increase defence spending and decrease their reliance on US military assistance.
