Nairobi: A major Kenyan transport strike triggered by rising fuel prices has entered its second day, completely paralyzing public transit and economic activity across the country.
The mass shutdown follows a day of severe civil unrest that resulted in at least four fatalities and left dozens of other protesters wounded. Organized transport workers launched the demonstration on Monday to protest skyrocketing fuel costs, which have been exacerbated globally by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The subsequent work stoppage effectively stranded thousands of commuters and forced businesses to close down nationwide.
The mounting domestic tension underscores growing concerns that the severe oil price spike could ignite wider political and economic instability across the African continent.
While security forces have deployed heavily in the capital city to prevent additional violence, government officials remain under intense pressure to address the cost-of-living crisis. Although transport unions are holding internal discussions, the ongoing strike continues to disrupt vital supply chains.
