MINNEAPOLIS: An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has been criminally charged for the nonfatal shooting of a Venezuelan man during a federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced on Monday that federal officer Christian Castro faces four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime for the January 14 shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.
A nationwide warrant has been issued for Castro’s arrest after a local investigation directly contradicted initial federal accounts of the encounter. ‘His federal badge does not make him immune from state charges for his criminal conduct,’ Moriarty declared.
The incident occurred during ‘Operation Metro Surge,’ a massive administration campaign targeting the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. While authorities initially claimed the immigrant attacked officers with a snow shovel and broom handle, city surveillance footage later revealed Castro fired alone through the duplex door while under no physical threat. The filing escalates a jurisdiction battle between Minnesota leaders and the federal government over accountability.
