Paris: According to police reports, six people were arrested by French authorities on Saturday after a large Palestinian flag was flown from the Eiffel Tower in an unauthorised protest in commemoration of Nakba Day.

Extinction Rebellion is a group that promotes climate change. France, which took responsibility for the incident, said that on Friday afternoon, activists draped the flag from the tower's first level as a ‘message of support’ for Palestinians in Gaza.

The group accused Israel with "massacres" in Palestinian territory and environmental destruction. The act took place on the same day as Nakba Day, which honours the Palestinian displacement during Israel's establishment in 1948.

In the past, symbolic political exhibitions connected to the Middle East conflict have been held atop the Eiffel Tower. During times of increased tension in recent years, flags and imagery associated with both Israel and Palestine have been projected onto the monument.
