Baghdad: According to a security source, ceremonial artillery fire celebrating the establishment of Iraq's new government was the cause of the loud explosions heard around Baghdad on Saturday.

Residents in the Iraqi capital were initially worried by the explosions amid current tensions in the region, but authorities subsequently clarified that there had been no attack or security problem. Following the adoption of the nation's new administration, official celebrations included the firing of artillery rounds.

As government supporters gathered in central Baghdad after MPs approved the new administration after months of political talks, witnesses reported hearing multiple loud explosions.

People were advised not to panic by security officials, who stated the artillery fire was a part of state protocol commemorating the handover to the new government.
