Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi welcomed an agreement on the exchange of detainees in Yemen, describing it as a positive humanitarian step towards building trust between the country’s rival parties.

In a statement issued from Riyadh, Al Budaiwi praised the efforts of Jordan for hosting the negotiations, as well as the mediation efforts led by the United Nations Special Envoy’s office and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

He said the agreement would help alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people and improve prospects for confidence-building measures between the warring sides.

The GCC chief reaffirmed the bloc’s support for all regional and international efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Yemen crisis.

He added that any settlement should be based on the three internationally recognised references: the Gulf Initiative and its implementation mechanism, the outcomes of Yemen’s National Dialogue Conference, and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216.

Al Budaiwi said the GCC remained committed to supporting efforts that would help restore security and stability in Yemen and ensure a better future for its people.
