Washington DC: The US President Donald Trump warned Taiwan against formally declaring independence from China following high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where tensions over the island emerged as one of the most sensitive issues between the two powers.
Speaking after the summit, Trump said he does not want to see any move toward Taiwanese independence that could trigger conflict with Beijing. He also indicated that the United States would soon decide on future arms sales to Taiwan, describing the matter as part of broader discussions with China.
During the meeting, Xi reportedly warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to “clashes and even conflicts” between the United States and China. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and strongly opposes any foreign support for Taiwanese independence.
Although Trump maintained a largely cautious tone on Taiwan during the summit, the issue dominated behind-the-scenes discussions as both sides attempted to stabilize relations amid wider geopolitical tensions involving trade, technology and regional security.
Taiwan later responded by accusing China of being the main threat to peace in the region and rejected Beijing’s sovereignty claims over the self-governing island. Taiwanese officials insisted that the island’s future should be decided only by its people.
The Taiwan question remains one of the biggest flashpoints in U.S.-China relations, with Washington continuing to support Taiwan militarily while officially recognizing Beijing under the longstanding “One China” policy.
