Brasília: A 13-year-old student is in custody following a deadly shooting at a state school in São Paulo that left two teachers dead and several others wounded. The attack took place at the Thomazia Montoro school in the Vila Sônia neighborhood during the start of classes on Monday.
The victims have been identified as 71-year-old Elisabete Tenreiro and 42-year-old Rita de Cássia, both educators at the institution. Three additional teachers and two students sustained injuries during the rampage but are expected to survive.
Dramatic security footage showed a physical education teacher heroically restraining the shooter until police arrived.
Governor Tarcísio de Freitas declared three days of official mourning for the state, while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the families. "My solidarity to the teachers and local community," the President stated, as the country faces a troubling rise in school-related violence.
