GENEVA: The World Health Organization (WHO) and Swiss health officials have confirmed that a medical evacuation is ‘ongoing’ for individuals aboard a cruise ship hit by a deadly strain of hantavirus.
The MV Hondius, currently located near the Cape Verde archipelago, is evacuating two sick crew members and one asymptomatic person. All three are reported to be in stable condition. Once the evacuation is complete, the vessel is expected to depart the islands.
Meanwhile, the Swiss Ministry of Health confirmed that a passenger from the same outbreak is already being treated at a specialized facility in Zurich.
While the patient is in isolation, officials have assured the public that there is no immediate danger to the broader population. The situation has drawn international concern as scientists investigate the ‘Andes’ strain of the virus, which is rare for its ability to spread through human-to-human contact.
Health experts are closely monitoring the spread as the ship traveled toward South Africa, marking a significant development in the global tracking of the virus.
The WHO representative in Cape Verde, Ann Lindstrand, emphasized that while the evacuations are critical, the remaining passengers and crew are being monitored to prevent further transmission.
