WASHINGTON DC: US Secret Service officers confronted and shot an armed ‘suspicious individual’ near the White House in Washington, D.C.. The incident began when patrolling agents identified a person on the outer perimeter of the complex who appeared to be carrying a firearm. After being approached, the suspect fled on foot and fired in the direction of the officers, prompting them to return fire.
The suspect was struck by law enforcement and subsequently hospitalized. During the exchange, a juvenile bystander was also hit by the suspect's gunfire; fortunately, the juvenile’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
Law enforcement confirmed that a weapon was recovered at the scene, which was located at 15th Street and Independence Avenue.
The shooting triggered a brief lockdown of the White House. While Vice President JD Vance's motorcade had transited through the area shortly before the encounter, officials stated there was no immediate indication that the suspect intended to target the motorcade.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident, though investigators are still determining if the actions were specifically directed at him.
This security breach follows heightened alertness in the capital after a separate shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner last month. The D.C. Police Department is currently handling the investigation into the latest event.
