Austria Expels Three Russian Embassy Staff Over Suspected Spying

Vienna: Austria has expelled three members of the Russian embassy on suspicion of espionage, in a move that further strains diplomatic ties between Vienna and Moscow.
The Austrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the individuals were declared persona non grata after intelligence assessments suggested possible involvement in intelligence-gathering activities. They have already left the country following the decision.
Authorities said the action was linked to concerns over suspected surveillance operations being conducted under diplomatic cover. While specific operational details were not fully disclosed, Austrian officials reiterated that diplomatic immunity cannot be used to facilitate espionage activities.
Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger said Austria would take a firmer stance against intelligence threats and continue monitoring suspected foreign espionage activity more closely.
The Russian embassy in Vienna strongly rejected the accusations, calling the decision “unjustified” and politically motivated, and warned of possible retaliatory measures.
Austria has repeatedly expelled Russian diplomats in recent years amid growing concerns that Vienna, home to several international organisations, has become a focal point for intelligence activity in Europe.
The latest expulsions add to a series of similar diplomatic actions across Europe since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reflecting heightened tensions and increased counterintelligence scrutiny across the region.
