Manila: A powerful magnitude 6 earthquake has struck Samar Island in the central Philippines, sparking evacuations and warnings of potential aftershocks.

The Philippine seismology agency, PHIVOLCS, reported that the tremor hit near the town of San Julian in Eastern Samar province at a depth of 56 kilometres on Monday.

Local disaster officials confirmed that while the earthquake was intense—lasting approximately 30 seconds—there have been no immediate reports of major damage, injuries, or fatalities. The disaster officer for Eastern Samar, Thomas Campomanes noted that early assessments have revealed only superficial cracks in some buildings.

Government employees in the region were evacuated as a precaution while engineers conducted safety inspections of various sites. Campomanes described the sensation of the quake as being "dribbled up and down" during the half-minute of shaking.

The Philippines is situated along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' a zone of frequent volcanic and seismic activity, and typically experiences more than 800 earthquakes every year.

This latest event follows a deadly period in October, when at least seven people lost their lives after two powerful offshore earthquakes struck the south of the country.
