PARIS: In a tragic incident on Sunday, French authorities discovered the bodies of two Sudanese women, aged approximately 20, aboard a small boat attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the UK.
The victims were found near Neufchâtel-Hardelot on a vessel carrying 82 migrants, which had suffered engine failure and was drifting back towards the French coast.
Regional prosecutor Guirec Le Bras indicated that the women likely died from suffocation or being crushed due to the extreme overcrowding on the boat.
Additionally, a pregnant woman from Ethiopia was airlifted to a hospital in Boulogne-sur-Mer in critical condition, while several others were treated for hypothermia and exhaustion.
Despite the deaths, dozens of migrants on the same vessel reportedly refused rescue from French patrol boats, insisting on continuing their journey to England. This incident highlights the ongoing danger of Channel crossings, which have claimed at least 15 lives so far this year.
