Taiwan accuses China of vegetable laundering via Vietnam

TAIWAN: Taiwanese authorities have officially accused China of using Vietnam as a transit point to bypass trade restrictions and flood the island with prohibited agricultural products.
According to reports, Chinese exporters are allegedly shipping vegetables to Vietnam, where they are repackaged and relabeled as Vietnamese produce before being exported to Taiwan. This ‘laundering’ tactic is designed to circumvent Taiwan’s strict ban on various Chinese agricultural goods, which are restricted due to biosecurity concerns and the protection of local farmers.
The investigation was triggered after Taiwanese customs officials noticed a suspicious surge in ‘Vietnamese’ vegetable imports that shared physical characteristics and pesticide residues typically associated with Chinese farming regions.
Officials warned that this practice not only undermines trade regulations but also poses a potential risk to food safety, as the origin of the produce is intentionally obscured. In response, Taiwan has vowed to tighten border inspections and collaborate with Vietnamese authorities to verify the authenticity of certificates of origin for all incoming shipments.
