US pledges $100 mn toward restoring Chernobyl protection

Washington DC: The United States has announced a commitment of $100 million to repair the protective dome at the Chernobyl nuclear site.

This funding follows a drone strike that damaged the shield in February 2025, raising urgent concerns regarding potential radiation leaks in the region.

The structural damage occurred during the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, leaving a significant hole in the outer radiation shell. France, currently leading the G7, has identified a total repair cost of approximately $580 million and is calling on international partners to help cover the remaining balance.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that the administration will work with Congress to secure these funds, framing the move as essential for global nuclear safety and non-proliferation. This assistance is critical for stabilising the massive metal structure that has protected the site since 2016.

The original 1986 disaster at the plant remains one of the worst nuclear accidents in history, necessitating long-term international cooperation to manage the site.

While Ukraine has accused Moscow of targeting its nuclear infrastructure, the U.S. statement referred to the damage as a result of the ‘senseless ongoing war’. International officials are now urging other European and G7 nations to make similar financial commitments to ensure the continued containment of radioactive material.
