Japanese Prosecutor Who Accused Boss of Rape to Resign After Probe Rejected

Tokyo: A Japanese prosecutor who accused her senior colleague of rape has said she will resign after authorities refused to open an independent investigation into the case.
The prosecutor, who has used a pseudonym to protect her identity, came forward in 2024 with allegations that her former boss assaulted her several years earlier. The accused, a former top prosecutor in Osaka, was arrested and initially admitted to the act but later claimed it was consensual.
She had requested an independent probe into harassment within the prosecution system, saying there could be other victims. However, her request was rejected, leading her to step down, saying it was a painful but necessary decision.
The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by sexual assault victims in Japan, where few women speak publicly about such experiences. It has also raised concerns about accountability and support systems within the country’s legal institutions.
