PYONGYANG : Russia and North Korea have formalized a strategic shift toward a long-term military partnership, moving beyond immediate wartime needs to establish a cooperation framework that will span the next several years.
Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov announced in the North Korean capital that both nations are finalizing a comprehensive military cooperation plan for 2027–2031, effectively institutionalizing their defense ties on a ‘stable, long-term footing.’
The new agreement builds upon the landmark 2024 mutual defense treaty, which requires immediate military intervention if either nation is attacked. The deepening bond was physically memorialized this week with the inauguration of a monument in Pyongyang dedicated to North Korean soldiers who died fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.
During the ceremonies, Belousov personally decorated North Korean servicemen who participated in the defense of Russia’s Kursk region, acknowledging the high cost of their involvement.
In exchange for thousands of personnel, missiles, and artillery shells, North Korea is reportedly gaining access to advanced military technology, energy supplies, and financial aid.
This exchange allows the Kim Jong Un regime to bypass global sanctions while providing Moscow with a critical supply chain for its ongoing conflict.
Experts view this evolving alliance not merely as a temporary marriage of convenience, but as a major geopolitical realignment designed to challenge Western influence in both Europe and the Pacific for years to come.
