Two former Israel PMs unite to challenge Netanyahu in elections

TEL AVIV: In a significant shift within the Israeli political landscape, former Prime Ministers Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett have announced they will run together in the upcoming elections.

The move aims to consolidate the opposition bloc and unseat the incumbent, Benjamin Netanyahu, whose current administration is often characterized as the most right-wing in the nation's history.

By joining forces, Lapid’s centrist Yesh Atid party and Bennett’s right-wing faction hope to bridge internal divisions and offer a unified alternative to the current government.

This alliance marks a return to the political arena for Bennett, who had stepped away from public life after their previous rotation government concluded in late 2022.

That coalition was notable for ending Netanyahu’s twelve-year tenure and including an independent Arab party for the first time. Lapid emphasized that the joint run is essential to focus efforts on a ‘critical’ election cycle that will determine the country's future direction.

As the campaign begins, this partnership represents a high-stakes attempt to reclaim the premiership and reshape Israel’s domestic and foreign policy.
