Madrid: Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said on Saturday she had “no regrets” about symbolically handing over her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump earlier this year.
Speaking at a news conference in Madrid, Machado praised Trump’s actions toward Venezuela and said his role in recent developments would not be forgotten by Venezuelans. She added that she stood by her decision to gift the medal.
Machado presented the medal to Trump during a White House meeting in January. The move drew international attention after the Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified that while the physical medal can change hands, the Nobel Peace Prize itself cannot be revoked, shared or transferred.
She also said she was coordinating with Washington regarding a possible return to Venezuela, adding that the United States remained important to efforts for what she described as a democratic transition in the country.
