Mies: Brazilian basketball legend Oscar Schmidt has died at the age of 68, FIBA announced on Friday, prompting tributes from across the global sporting community.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest scorers in basketball history, Schmidt was known for his remarkable shooting ability and fierce competitiveness. Nicknamed Mão Santa (“Holy Hand”), he became a national icon in Brazil and a celebrated figure worldwide.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said Schmidt’s death was felt far beyond basketball, describing him as an emblematic figure of the sport and an inspiration to generations of athletes.
Schmidt scored 49,737 points across his club and international career, a record that stood for more than two decades until LeBron James surpassed it in 2024.
He represented Brazil in five Olympic Games — 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996 — and played in four FIBA World Cups. At the 1988 Olympics, he scored 55 points against Spain, while he averaged 28.8 points per game in Olympic competition.
For the Brazilian national team, Schmidt played 326 games and scored 7,693 points. He helped Brazil win bronze at the 1978 FIBA World Cup in Manila and multiple South American titles.
One of his most famous performances came at the 1987 Pan American Games, when he scored 46 points in the gold medal game to lead Brazil to a comeback victory over the United States.
Schmidt enjoyed a long club career spanning Brazil, Italy and Spain, retiring in 2003 at age 45. He won several domestic and international titles during his career.
Though drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the sixth round of the 1984 NBA Draft, Schmidt chose to remain in Europe rather than join the NBA.
He was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
Schmidt is survived by his wife Maria Cristina Victorino, his children, and a legacy that helped shape basketball in Brazil and beyond.
