Austria Recalls Baby Food Jars Over Suspected Tampering Risk

Vienna: Baby food manufacturer HiPP has recalled a range of baby food jars sold in Austria after warning that a lethal substance may have been introduced into one product through suspected tampering.
The company said it was withdrawing its entire line of baby food jars sold through SPAR Austria after it could not rule out contamination involving the HiPP Carrot/Potato – 190 grams product.
HiPP said consumption of the affected item “could be fatal” and urged customers not to eat the product. Consumers were asked to return jars to the store where they were purchased.
The company said the product can be identified by a white label with a red circle on the bottom of the jar.
Police in Austria’s eastern Burgenland region issued an appeal for witnesses, according to the company statement, but authorities did not provide further details on the suspected substance or the circumstances behind the investigation.
No injuries or illnesses were immediately reported.
The recall follows another food safety alert in February, when Danone recalled more than 120 batches of infant milk formula in Austria and Germany, according to Austria’s food safety agency.
