Washington: Todd Lyons, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a central figure in President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda, will resign at the end of May, federal officials announced on Thursday.

Markwayne Mullin said Lyons’ final day in office will be May 31, praising him as a strong leader who helped improve public safety.

“We wish him luck on his next opportunity in the private sector,” Mullin said in a statement.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately provide a reason for Lyons’ departure.

Lyons was appointed acting director in March 2025 and oversaw the agency during a major expansion of immigration enforcement operations.

Under his leadership, ICE received a significant increase in congressional funding, which was used to expand hiring and detention capacity while increasing arrests.

The agency also led several high-profile enforcement operations in major U.S. cities, including Chicago and Minneapolis.

Those operations drew criticism after two protesters died during clashes involving federal immigration officers, prompting renewed scrutiny of ICE’s tactics.

Stephen Miller, a key architect of Trump’s immigration policy, described Lyons as a dedicated leader whose work helped protect American communities.

It is not yet clear who will replace Lyons.

His departure comes as the Department of Homeland Security adjusts to new leadership following Trump’s dismissal of former Secretary Kristi Noem.

Lyons also recently faced congressional questioning over controversial ICE operations and the agency’s use of expanded powers to enter homes and make arrests without a judge’s warrant.

He joined ICE in 2007 as an immigration enforcement agent in Texas.
