Naples: Three masked robbers carried out a dramatic bank heist in Naples, Italy, on April 16, holding around 25 people hostage for nearly two hours before escaping through an underground tunnel.
The suspects, one of whom was reportedly armed, entered a branch of Crédit Agricole at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time. Customers and employees inside the bank were taken hostage during the incident.
Authorities responded swiftly, and all hostages were safely freed shortly after 1:30 p.m. without serious injuries, according to Naples Prefect Michele di Bari.
Police reportedly broke windows to gain access to the bank, but by then the robbers had already fled. Investigators said the suspects escaped through a tunnel leading into the sewer system, indicating careful planning.
The robbers made off with the contents of dozens of safe deposit boxes. The total value of the stolen items remains unknown, as only the individual box holders know what was stored inside.
Around 40 police officers, including sniffer dog units, were deployed to search for the suspects. Forensic teams are continuing their investigation at the scene, collecting evidence such as fingerprints.
