Taipei: Taiwan has charged 10 people, including current and former military personnel, for allegedly spying for China.

Prosecutors say nine of the accused were members of the army, navy, air force, and coast guard. They are accused of sharing secret military information and recording videos showing loyalty to China’s Communist Party in exchange for money.

According to officials, the group was contacted through social media by people linked to the Chinese government. They were allegedly paid amounts ranging from about $2,000 to over $50,000, using bank transfers and cryptocurrency.

Another civilian is accused of helping by allowing his bank account to be used to transfer money to the suspects.

Prosecutors say these actions have seriously harmed Taiwan’s national security and are seeking stricter punishments as a warning. Those found guilty could face 10 years or more in prison.

This will be Taiwan’s first national security case to be heard by citizen judges, under a new law aimed at involving the public in major legal decisions.

Cases of spying for China have increased in recent years, especially involving current and former military personnel, as tensions between the two sides continue to grow.
