Istanbul: A former student opened fire at a high school in Turkey, injuring 16 people, including students and teachers, before taking his own life.

The attack happened in the Siverek district of Sanliurfa. The gunman used a shotgun and fired randomly inside a school corridor, causing panic as students ran for safety.

Security forces quickly arrived, evacuated the school, and surrounded the attacker. According to officials, he killed himself when cornered by police.

Among the injured were 10 students, four teachers, one police officer, and one cafeteria worker. Ambulances rushed to the scene to take the injured to hospitals.

Local governor Hasan Sildak said a full investigation is underway and described the incident as a tragic but rare case.

School shootings are uncommon in Turkey, which has strict gun control laws. However, a similar incident last year had already raised concerns about school safety.
