Australia to spend billions on drones as warfare changes

CANBERRA: Australia will increase its defense spending on drone technology by up to AU$5 billion ($3.6 billion), Defense Minister Richard Marles announced Tuesday. The decision reflects a strategic pivot in response to the evolving nature of modern conflict, particularly the widespread use of autonomous systems in the Middle East and Ukraine.

The investment is part of a larger AU$12 billion to AU$15 billion commitment over the next decade toward autonomous capabilities. While Australia has traditionally focused on large-scale platforms like the ‘Ghost Shark’ autonomous submarine and ‘Ghost Bat’ fighter jet, the new funding will also prioritize mass-produced, lower-cost drones and advanced counter-drone systems.

Minister Marles emphasized that ‘asymmetric’ warfare utilizing cheaper, high-volume units has become central to current global contests. This shift necessitates a ‘full spectrum’ of drone capabilities to protect Australia’s vast coastline.

The updated national defense strategy, detailing these initiatives, is scheduled for release this Thursday. Additionally, international interest in Australian-developed technology is growing, with Germany recently considering the ‘Ghost Bat’ for its own air force modernization.
