Indonesia's president to meet Macron in France

JAKARTA : Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace on Tuesday to discuss strategic cooperation and global dynamics. This high-level meeting follows a five-hour discussion between Prabowo and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, where talks focused on energy and mineral resource security.
The diplomatic push comes as Southeast Asia’s largest economy faces mounting pressure from global oil price volatility. Despite being an oil producer, Indonesia is a net importer and heavily subsidizes domestic fuel. To manage energy stocks, the government recently implemented fuel rationing and a mandatory work-from-home policy for civil servants one day per week.
President Prabowo has justified his frequent international travels as essential to securing energy supplies for the nation. While Indonesia recently joined the BRICS bloc and maintains a non-aligned posture, it has also engaged in trade agreements with the United States. The Paris talks are expected to further Indonesia’s objective of diversifying its strategic partnerships amidst shifting global geopolitical tensions.
