Morocco–Egypt Ties Enter New Phase as Joint Coordination Committee Launched in Cairo
In a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations, Aziz Akhannouch, Prime Minister of Morocco, arrived in Cairo on Sunday to participate in the inaugural session of the joint coordination and follow-up committee between Morocco and Egypt. Officials from both sides described the initiative as the beginning of a new era aimed at achieving full economic integration between the two nations.
Akhannouch was received at Cairo International Airport by his Egyptian counterpart, Mostafa Madbouly, in an official ceremony that included a guard of honour and the playing of both national anthems. The reception was attended by senior officials, including Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Mohamed Farid, and Morocco’s Ambassador to Cairo, Mohamed Ait Ouali.
The high-level Moroccan delegation’s visit marks the formal launch of the joint committee, a mechanism designed to enhance coordination and expand cooperation across key sectors. On Monday, Akhannouch and Madbouly are set to hold bilateral talks at the government headquarters in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital. The discussions will be followed by an expanded meeting involving both delegations, culminating in the signing of several agreements aimed at boosting economic, trade, and investment ties.
Strengthening Sectoral Cooperation
The launch of the committee follows extensive preparatory meetings held earlier on Sunday at Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The session was co-chaired by Ihab Fahmy and Khalid bin Sheikh, bringing together representatives from over 50 ministries and technical bodies from both countries.
According to officials, both sides reached a broad consensus on enhancing cooperation in priority sectors, reflecting a shared commitment to deepening economic integration. Fahmy highlighted that the committee represents the first high-level coordination mechanism of its kind between Egypt and Morocco, aligning with the directives of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Mohammed VI to elevate bilateral relations into a “genuine partnership.”
Regional Context and Security Concerns
The diplomatic engagement comes at a time of heightened regional tensions. Fahmy pointed to ongoing military developments involving Iran, which he said have contributed to instability in global markets, disrupted supply chains, and increased uncertainty across the region.
He reiterated Egypt’s firm stance, expressing “categorical rejection and condemnation” of Iranian attacks targeting Gulf and other Arab nations. Fahmy also underscored Egypt’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions through engagement with regional and international actors, بهدف avoiding a broader conflict that could push the region into widespread instability.
Toward a Strategic Partnership
The establishment of the joint coordination committee signals a strategic shift in Morocco–Egypt relations, focusing on structured cooperation and long-term integration. As both countries navigate complex regional challenges, the initiative reflects a shared vision to strengthen economic resilience, enhance trade partnerships, and promote stability through closer collaboration.
With agreements expected to be signed and new frameworks set to be implemented, the Cairo meetings could mark a turning point in advancing a comprehensive and sustainable partnership between the two leading Arab economies.
