Nigerian military rescues 31 kidnapped Easter worshippers
At least five people were killed and 31 others rescued after an armed attack on a church in northwest Nigeria, the military said on Sunday.
According to the army, the assault occurred during an Easter service in Ariko village, located in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Gunmen reportedly stormed the church, killing worshippers and abducting several civilians.
Security forces launched a response operation shortly after the incident, successfully rescuing 31 hostages. Troops are continuing efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible.
Local Christian leaders said the situation may be more severe, with reports indicating that two churches were targeted in the area and that the number of victims could be higher. Investigations are ongoing to confirm the full details of the attack.
The region has faced persistent insecurity in recent years, with armed groups carrying out kidnappings, raids, and attacks on rural communities, often operating from remote forest areas.
Authorities have pledged to intensify operations to restore security and prevent further violence.
