KAMPALA: A 39-year-old man has been arrested following a fatal stabbing attack at a nursery school in the Ugandan capital that left four children dead.
The incident occurred on Thursday at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program in the Makindye Division of Kampala. The Uganda Police Force confirmed the fatalities, identifying the victims as three boys and one girl, all aged between two and three years old.
According to official police statements, the suspect gained access to the school by posing as a parent interested in enrolling a child. After a brief interaction with a school administrator that reportedly included the payment of an admission fee, the individual exited the office and locked the facility's gate. He then allegedly targeted the children using a sharp object while they were within the school grounds.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Okello Christopher Onyum, was apprehended at the scene by a security guard from the neighboring Ggaba Community Church.
Following the attack, a large, angry crowd gathered and attempted to lynch the individual. Local police were forced to intervene, firing warning shots into the air to secure the suspect and disperse the gathering before he could be harmed.
Onyum is currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation as investigators work to determine the motive behind the killings. Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stated that while the arrest was made immediately following the event, the official investigation remains active. The community remains in shock as authorities continue to process the scene and gather further evidence regarding the tragedy.
