SEOUL: French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in South Korea on Thursday for a two-day state visit aimed at bolstering strategic ties and addressing escalating global conflicts. This marks the second leg of a high-stakes Indo-Pacific tour following a three-day state visit to Japan. The transition from Tokyo to Seoul signals a concerted effort by France to solidify its role as a key European security and economic partner across the East Asian axis.
The President is accompanied by First Lady Brigitte Macron, who joined him in Tokyo for an audience with the Japanese Imperial couple before arriving in Seoul.
The itinerary is packed with high-level engagements, including a summit with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to discuss security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Beyond diplomacy, Macron will pay his respects at a war memorial for French soldiers who served in the Korean War, participate in an economic forum, and host a dinner featuring prominent K-pop stars and South Korean filmmakers.
The visit occurs against a backdrop of severe global instability, with markets reeling from the Hormuz crisis and the Middle East conflict continuing to dominate the international agenda.
