SYDNEY: A Sydney court has refused an application to suppress the identities and home address of the family of Naveed Akram, the man accused of the deadly Bondi Beach shooting in December 2025. Judge Hugh Donnelly ruled on Thursday that a suppression order would be ‘ineffective’ as the family’s details have already been widely circulated globally on social media.

Naveed Akram, 24, faces a massive indictment including terrorism, 15 counts of murder, and planting explosives following the Hanukkah celebration attack that also claimed the life of his father, Sajid Akram.

The court heard that Akram’s mother, brother, and sister have faced significant harassment and threats of vigilante violence at their home in Bonnyrigg. Despite these safety concerns, the judge noted that ‘voluminous overseas content’ is readily available and that the mother had previously identified herself in a media interview. While acknowledging the ‘unprecedented public outrage,’ the court prioritised the principle of open justice over the late-stage request for anonymity.
