The Moscow Aviation Institute has announced that it is working on the development of a new satellite capable of imaging and monitoring the Earth even in low-visibility conditions.

Andrei Ivanov, Deputy Head of Scientific Research at the institute, said the project is being developed in cooperation with Gazprom SPKA and a Russian communications technology manufacturer in Izhevsk. He confirmed that the team has already produced a prototype radar satellite designed for remote sensing of the Earth during poor visibility and heavy cloud cover.

“We have achieved significant progress in this satellite project and have further plans in this field,” Ivanov said.

The radar satellite is being developed under Russia’s “Seamless Operational Environment” initiative, which aims to integrate space systems with unmanned technologies and ensure smooth interaction through standardized communication and data exchange protocols.

Once operational, the satellite will collect Earth observation data and transmit it to spacecraft or unmanned aerial vehicles. Clients will then be able to request data according to their needs, receiving either satellite-only information, drone-collected data, or a hybrid combination of multiple sources. The data will be processed using specialized software, including artificial intelligence systems, to enhance analysis and usability.

Moscow Aviation Institute emphasized that the system is designed to create a more unified and intelligent approach to Earth observation, combining space and aerial technologies for improved data accuracy and accessibility.

Gazprom SPKA, a commercial subsidiary of Russia’s Gazprom established in 2015, specializes in the design, assembly, and testing of space technologies and is a key partner in the project.
