Egypt Imposes Early Closures to Save Energy Amid Regional Crisis

Cairo: Egypt has introduced new nationwide early closing hours for shops, restaurants, and cafés in an effort to conserve oil-powered electricity amid the ongoing US–Israel–Iran conflict.
The measures, implemented over the weekend, require businesses to shut earlier than usual disrupting operations during peak hours and challenging Cairo’s long-standing reputation as “the city that never sleeps.”
The policy is part of a broader set of steps taken in recent weeks to manage the impact of a worsening regional energy crisis, driven by rising oil prices and disruptions to key shipping routes.
Although Egypt is not directly involved in the conflict, it has been significantly affected by its economic fallout.
The early closures are expected to hit hundreds of thousands of small businesses across the country, many of which such as eateries, juice shops, and cafés traditionally operate late into the night or even around the clock.
