Trump Floats Plan to “Take Iran’s Oil” in Financial Times Interview

Washington: US President Donald Trump has said he would prefer the United States to “take the oil” in Iran, raising the possibility of seizing key energy infrastructure during an interview with the Financial Times.

Speaking on Sunday, Trump suggested the US could target Kharg Island a strategic hub that handles the majority of Iran’s oil exports as part of its options in the ongoing conflict.

He compared the idea to Washington’s past ambitions to control oil resources in Venezuela, following the capture of its leader Nicolás Maduro earlier this year.

“My favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran,” Trump said, while acknowledging that such a move could face criticism at home.

He also indicated that any operation to control the island would likely require a prolonged US presence. “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” he said.

Kharg Island remains central to Iran’s economy, serving as the main gateway for its crude exports and a critical pillar of its oil revenue.
