Egypt raises train and metro tickets starting Friday

CAIRO: Egypt has implemented a raise in train and subway fares by up to 25 per cent, effective today, as the country grapples with soaring energy costs. The Transport Ministry confirmed that long-distance rail travel will increase by 12.5 per cent, while short-distance trips and Cairo’s underground metro fares will rise by 25 per cent.
The government cited ‘serious financial challenges’ driven by a 14 to 30 per cent surge in domestic fuel prices and rising electricity costs. Officials noted that maintaining the ageing fleet and the increased cost of imported spare parts purchased with hard currency have placed an unsustainable burden on state-owned rail and tunnel authorities.
To mitigate the impact on citizens, the ministry is urging students and employees to purchase discounted monthly passes. While the hike follows a period of fixed ticket prices, authorities maintain the adjustment is essential to cover operational costs, fund ongoing infrastructure developments, and support salary increases for public sector workers.
By increasing investment in its existing assets, the Ministry aims to boost internal resources and ensure the sustainability of high-quality services. This move aligns with broader economic adjustments in Egypt, as global market volatility continues to drive up the cost of petroleum products and essential utilities across the nation.
