WASHINGTON DC: The United States has accused China of violating international maritime law by detaining several Panama-flagged vessels in the South China Sea. According to the US State Department, Chinese authorities intercepted the ships within disputed waters, claiming they were operating illegally in China’s exclusive economic zone.
This escalation has further strained relations between the two superpowers, with Washington describing the detentions as a ‘clear violation of freedom of navigation’ in one of the world’s busiest trade routes.
In response, Beijing defended its actions, asserting that the vessels were involved in unauthorised fishing and resource extraction. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that it was merely exercising its ‘sovereign rights’ to protect its maritime interests.
However, the international community has expressed concern, as these actions challenge established maritime boundaries and threaten the stability of global shipping lanes.
The US has called for the immediate release of the ships and their crews, urging China to adhere to international rulings. This confrontation highlights the ongoing struggle for control in the South China Sea, where overlapping territorial claims continue to spark diplomatic friction. As tensions rise, many fear that such incidents could lead to a broader maritime conflict if not resolved through diplomatic channels.
